The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1907 by John H. Patterson. Patterson, the founder of the National Cash Register Company (NCR), called together area business owners and leaders to form the Chamber. Like many U.S. cities of the time, businesses were forming chambers of commerce to help better coordinate the efforts of existing businesses. To date, the Chamber serves 2,500 businesses in a nine county region.
We continue to “raise the bar” each year in an effort to reach a higher level of service and dedication to our vision … our mission … and our members. Our members deserve and have come to expect the Chamber to provide value and return for their investment. To that end the Chamber is constantly creating new benchmarks for improvement. The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce is nationally recognized by its peers as one of the largest and most effective Chambers in the U.S. The Chamber has been fully accredited by the United States Chamber of Commerce since 1995 and re-accredited with five stars in 2005, the highest rating for any chamber in the nation, a distinction given to less than 1% of all chambers in America. The Chamber has maintained the five star accreditation through the 2010 and 2015 accreditation process.
What We Do
From the beginning days to now, the Chamber realizes its vital role as the lead business advocate in our region. Among thousands of initiatives and projects in our 100-plus year history, the Chamber was instrumental in: the adoption of one of the first commission-city manager forms of government in the City of Dayton; the establishment of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Wright State University; the development of Dayton International Airport; and workforce development initiatives such as the nationally recognized Job Center.
To position the Dayton region as the world's greatest place to live, work and grow business.
To strengthen, promote and advocate for our member businesses and the region's economy.
- Diversity: We believe our differences give us the perspective, strength and wisdom that are critical to our success.
- Advocacy: We seek to understand the needs of our members and to champion the causes that matter to our business community.
- Collaboration: We connect our members and our community to produce unique opportunities for economic growth and prosperity.
- Courage: We show leadership, integrity and transparency to earn and maintain the trust of our members.
What is our Chamber?

Who Are Chamber Members?

Who Leads Your Chamber?
The membership provides the basic leadership of the Chamber. The Board of Trustees determines policies and set goals and direction. The day-to-day operations of the Chamber are handled by a professional CEO. The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce represents nearly 3,000 organizations in the nine county Dayton region.
Today, the chamber focuses on three core competency areas: government advocacy, economic development and member services. In order to ensure that the Chamber stays focused on its vision and mission, Board of Trustees members and other volunteers develop a long-term comprehensive strategic plan.
